Crypto 101 readings -

This one got me reading on and on..

Cryptocurrency , block chain, DeFi . so much to read, and so less time .. so much shit to clean at work 💔

https://ringgitohringgit.com/investing/cryptocurrency-malaysia/

(credit to author Suraya)

  • Bitcoin (BTC) – the OG crypto. The one you heard about the most, and the one that started it all
  • Ethereum (ETH) – ‘Programmable money’. People interested in DeFi – Decentralised Finance – should check out this one.
  • Litecoin (LTC) – kinda like budget version of bitcoin (oop I said it). They say that if bitcoin is digital gold, then litecoin is digital silver
  • Ripple (XRP) – Ripple is actually a private and CENTRALISED company, which means crypto purists hate it. Holding XRP is kinda sorta like holding stocks in a remittance service provider
  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH) – A fork of Bitcoin. See Section #9 – Why are there two bitcoins

Finding purpose in life - shared by ck5453

Again, a good article re-shared by ck5453. Relevant to me now, kind of know what i wanted but need some luck here and there, and a little push of fate to get to that.

1. Follow Your Heart Not Your Head

You may feel unfulfilled or unhappy if you are currently stuck doing a job that your heart just isn’t in. It’s likely that you spend a lot of time at work, so dragging yourself out of bed to do something that you don’t enjoy every day can feel like a real chore.
Your heart is your strongest indicator of your true purpose and passion. So ask yourself what it is that you’re really interested in and love doing. Landing a job in something that you’re passionate about and that excites you will mean you are naturally more joyful and motivated to perform to your full potential. If you’re unsure exactly what your calling is, a great place to start is to ask people close to you for their opinion.
It can be difficult and overwhelming to pinpoint our skills and qualities when we look at ourselves, but others can easily pick up on things that they notice. Be careful not to go in a specific direction purely down to what others think of you, but take note of what your friends and family believe that you’re good at, and use that as a starting point.

2. Make Memories Over Money

Many people live to work, when really we should all work to live. So it’s important that we don’t forget to do the living! Set time aside so that you’re able to do things for yourself, rather than focusing all of your efforts on your job. Get up early on your days off, so you can get out there and do you.
Ask yourself, what are the things that you really need to experience or accomplish before you die? Is there anything that you would hugely regret not doing before you die? If these questions do provoke answers, then gather them all together into a ‘bucket list’ or a to-do list, and make sure you do them! It may be that you want to travel a part of the world you’ve always dreamt of going, see your favourite artist in concert, climb a mountain, or run a marathon.
You may want to pick up a new hobby or learn a new skill, go scuba diving or skiing, or face your fears by going bungee jumping, cliff jumping, rock climbing or skydiving. You might want to go stargazing high up in the mountains, see the northern lights, trek through the amazon rain forest, or raft the Grand Canyon. The point is, if you don’t do all of these things while you can, then sooner or later it will be too late.

3. Build Relationships Over Possessions

You could have the latest smartphone, the flashiest car, the biggest mansion, and 10 holiday homes in the most exotic destinations, but unless you have family and friends to share them with, you will still end up being lonely and unhappy. You will live a far happier life if you invest time into building and maintaining relationships with your loved ones.
Stop watching so much TV, or allowing yourself to become consumed by social media, and focus on the real people in front of you. Always make time for those you care about, put your family first and forgive and forget. Although quality is sometimes better than quantity when it comes to friendship, you should make a substantial effort to nurture the relationships you currently have and always make rooms for new ones.
Many people believe that their purpose in life is to raise a family, and this could be something you want to do in order to fulfil your life. It could be that this doesn’t feel like an option for you, for example if you haven’t found the right life partner to have a family with yet, or it could be for medical reasons.
Instead of giving up if this is your dream, there are other options such as IVF treatment or you may choose to foster a child. Of course it could be that you simply don’t want children at all, in which case you will have a different life experience.

4. Don’t Forget to Give Back

Although it’s important to take from life what you can in order to try and fulfil it, it’s essential that you remember to give back too. Investing in yourself and your future to ensure all areas of your life are successful is key, but one of the best ways to seek happiness is actually through your service to others.
Perform kind deeds without expecting anything in return, and the rest will follow. You could think about letting others know how much they mean to you, by sending a letter or a text to one of your friends or family members. You could donate unwanted clothes or food to a homeless shelter, or buy a homeless person in the street a warm cup of tea or a meal.
You might want to volunteer at a charity, whether it’s walking the dogs at your local shelter, mentoring vulnerable children or reading to older people in care homes. You could also look at ways to fundraise for your favourite charity, be it a cake sale, a jumble sale, a sponsored walk or bag packing at your local supermarket.
Once you start to give back, you’ll feel a sense of achievement, knowing that you have helped others and made a difference which will make you feel valued and give you a purpose.

SaltMarsh Running tips - Belt buckle, Belly Button, Ninja & Quick steps

Just sharing out again this simple, effective tips of "Belt buckle, Belly Button, Ninja & Quick steps" by SaltMarsh (click link to read full details).

Belt buckle.

Shoulders back, hips forward, head up, show their belt buckle off to the world.

Belly button.

Don't to let your swinging hands cross the midpoint of your body

Ninja.

Try to run quietly, and you’ll find that you rise up on your toes a bit, shorten your stride, and gain better control of your body. Ninjas move quietly. Try running like a ninja to improve your running economy.

Quick steps.

One of the most difficult things to learn as a distance runner is to shorten your stride and focus on quick steps to minimize injury. If you shorten your stride and focus on a quicker turnover you’ll be lighter on your feet and run longer with less effort. This is most apparent on hills.

Quora: Running form, which one do you match?

Interesting read on running, Quora is the place to look for answers nowadays.

So far i got no injury, didn't push myself too hard & try to keep straight back posture, do warm up circuit before start. Might need to do some walk to warm down after hitting 4miles. Can feel a bit stress on lower back, but no pain yet. First 1 mile i usually try to push harder, by 2nd miles mind screams 'this is shit!' , and got back to normal by 3rd / 4th mile depending on amount of sleep I'm getting- >6hrs, usually i feel great and can go on quite consisently. Always run with earphones tucked in my ears so not sure if i make loud noises, I saw some runners run in 'floating' fluid motion, that's a nice form to use. Can't really go 'The unicorn' my feet just refuses when i tried before to increase pace LOL.

Excerpts from quora below:

"This will be a long answer but if you are a long distance runner, I know, you will endure."

First of all let me clarify one thing: there is no “best” technique for running. Yes, there are some “better” techniques but most of the time, the running techniques are subjective and depend upon your body structure & fitness, running distance, and running surface. So try various techniques and ease into one which you find most comforting.Following information is only for Long Distance Running and out of my own experiences as a Runner. - Mr Gurvinder

A good running technique is not only about proper foot landing and body posture. It is as much about how you are breathing and even what you are thinking while running!

Firstly, judge your current running technique on following parameters:
  1. Do you experience joint pains (usually in knees and ankles) especially when you run on hard surfaces like roads etc.? -guess still young to experience any haha, have to be conservative & not overstress myself to the point of injury
  2. Do you experience lower back pains after running? -no
  3. Do you experience shoulder pains during running? -no
  4. Do you generate excessive noise while taking steps during running? - need to observe
  5. Do you feel sharp pains in lower left/right side of your abdomen?-no
  6. Is your breathing erratic and arrhythmic while running? -no, not too sure actually
  7. Does your mind give up even before you have reached your body’s limit? - sometimes yes, mind saying 'Screw this!' but usually im ok after a 10-45 sec rest. Don't give up i guess.
  8. Or do you match any of the following (above diagram)
Dan Baciu wrote some good stuff, here is a laundry list of more highlights I think about, top down.

  • Head level
  • Ears dry so headphones stay in -i wonder how to do this..its warm & humid in Malaysia..
  • Only play awesome music -can relate to this, must have good bass/beatrate
  • Relax your face - you mean smile?
  • Breathe in your nose, out your mouth -really?
  • Don't wear cotton shirts, wear polyester, it breathes better
First and the foremost thing: Do a proper Warm-up routine. After that start the run with jogging and increase the pace. This prevents cramps during running.

  • Avoid Over-Striding: Look for the alignment of knee and ankle upon initial contact. Ideally we’re looking for the knee to be flexing directly above the ankle on initial contact.
  • Run Tall: Do not bend the waist. Run with slight forward lean keeping the back flat.
  • Being Hydrated during running is very critical. Drink a glass of water 15 minutes before running. During running, drink half glass of water after every 20 minutes or sip some energy drinks.
  • Eat a banana or some other fruit before one hour to get sufficient energy required for running.
  • Control of Breathing: Breathe deeply as opposed to shallow breaths which increases oxygen intake. Stay relaxed and do not get excited while running.
  • Relax Shoulders & Strengthen Glutes and Core during the run. Do not bounce or twist excessively.
  • Have a target of certain number of minutes or distance for the day and increase it gradually. - <12min per mile, or 3.5 -4 miles depending on how i feel on the day.
  • Before stopping, jog for about 2 minutes. Then perform a cool-down stretch routine which makes the muscles relaxed, improves the flexibility and makes you ready for the next day run - need to start this, consistency and injury free is my goal to good health

Mobile game: Summoners War: Sky Arena

Ahh, Summoner wars. Been on this one for some time. 1.5 yrs roughly, longest game i had on my mobile game history up to date. Very decent game with good animation and superb effort by developer team. Kudos and good job to Com2US.

By far the most updated games i experienced, will see at least 1 event every alternate weekend and new updates balance coming up and or some festival related event.

It's a pretty (graphics) game that puts you in a role of a summoner, so kind of like cool pokemon-type with pretty graphics. Add on Runes system to make things really interesting.

Daily rotation of Dungeons to hunt for essenses needed to evolve monsters, farm better runes or even secret dungeons that allow users to collect pieces of summoning stone for a new monster.

Story mode is pretty good to help beginners get up to speed with game mechanism. What keeps me playing on is the replayability and passive play mode - autoplay (once you setup your Monsters party and rune them properly- all these makes the big difference in game).

Game play: Puts monsters in front of your screen (player as summoner perspective) to control turn based fight. A little bit like tactical rpg game or hit autoplay- the AI gets a little better nowadays with developers taking in feedbacks from players actively. It's a free to play with in game purchase. Don't worry i still can get by without buying any in-game cash so far.

But be warned that drop/summon rates are really low ~1 digit% for 4* summon and <0.x% for 5*. Up to date only have a Fire dragon-knight as my sole summoned Nat5*. However, those who are patient can go the fusing route for Dark Ifrit/Wind valkyrie/water phoenix and also get ifrit stones from Guild war points exchange, which is pretty fair to me. Achievable, just don't give up! :)

Combination of monster skills makes this game tick uniquely- attacker, defensive, support, utility type, healers. Try to observe the buff and debuff in game, which can tip the tide of battle to your side. Attack bar movers/remover, speed/atk/def buff,armor/attack/slow debuff, leader skills , dispels and attacks proportionate to def/hp/current hp etc..

Other game mode is Trial of Ascensions, World boss and Guild wars all for lucrative rewards in game. Don't forget to clear daily arena challenge for free gems. The gem system is pretty fair in this game.Do all these game mode to get free gems. Of course you can speed up by using cash but not a 100% guarantee since summons are all random.

Again would stress that nothing makes the game much better than developers working around the clock, dropping players events on almost every festive seasons, consistent balancing updates and new exciting monsters addition constantly. Link of googleplay here.

gotta get em all! LOL

Tips for beginners:
a) Run story mode up to Faimon and farm for Fire Inugami. This guy is a great farmer, but don't bring him up to 6*. He is probably useful enough till you get better monsters.
b) Collect gems and buy special mystic scroll package. 10x scrolls + 1 each of element-mon
c) Check the daily shop - buy mystic scroll if you are rich enough
d) Do the daily missions for free 10 gems.
e) Keep and hold on to 4* above till you find out more. Each have their usefulness..i fodder'ed Lumirecia on the 3 month of play without knowing she is one of the best healers in game... *face palm*
f) Keep an eye out for good % runes at position 2,4, and 6. I initially ran up some monsters to 4* naively with numerical atk, def, hp and was wondering why they are so freaking weak. ROFL.

after you get started a while you will be able to relate to & understand this funny video:

Telco news: Maxis update

This is an interesting twist to the Maxis rant saga that's going on right now. Looks like they are going into red alert mode now.
Read the lowyat post & it's CEO+Business strategy manager's apology video here.

Got this SMS last week.

Highlights

All MaxisONE Plans will soon be upgraded with much more data.
All existing MaxisONE Plan customers will automatically enjoy the upgrade before the end of the month.
Maxis will be giving all MaxisONE Plan customers free 3GB data from 14th of April to tide them over until their next bill refresh.
Enterprise MaxisONE Business plans will also be getting an upgrade soon.
Any new MaxisONE Plan customers from today onwards will also automatically get the upgrade before the end of the month.(source)

At least there is now more data upgrade for Maxis users (or soon to be). Still inferior unlimited voice/SMS + data plan price-wise compared to other telco plans, but it's a much better package now. The choice is still ours to make, whether we really need coverage everywhere or just in urban areas is fine.

Celcom is still offering same package with 10Gb at RM80/month so there are still many who complains after this announcement.  Well, at least these guys are doing something now. Well done people. Wish this can happen with our gomen too.

What's up with Telcos in Malaysia today?

In short, Maxis don't offer special privilege , rate or even decent customer service to loyal customers (i'm talking bout users sticking with Maxis for >5years) despite their much more expensive packages, this going to tick off many loyal users with so many good packages from rival telcos updated so frequently. Loyalty program is only taking action once a user starts porting to other provider.

Read the rants here.
and here.
and here, an article on malaysianwireless.

See what I concluded on my last post paid comparison & prepaid plan comparison post?

Everywhere loyal Maxis users >5 to 10 years saying they gonna port to others. Not really sure why Maxis do not address these complains. People WILL port out due to price differences alone.

This is especially true as i see so many comment in lowyat and facebook circles complaining & saying they will port out soon. Why pay RM130+ for 3GB unlimited when you can get better package at less than RM100??

If you are still reading this, there are better postpaid plans from Celcom, Digi or U Mobile.
Celcom’s First Gold plan is priced at RM80/month with Unlimited Calls & SMS, 5+5GB data. Details here.
Digi has a new postpaid plan with 7GB data (roll over data to the next month), Unlimited Calls at RM78/month. Details here.
U Mobile’s Hero P70 postpaid plan comes with 15GB data, Unlimited Call at RM70/month. Details here. (source)

Maxis's response is nothing remarkable as well...poor PR skills?

So kedekut to give some extra example data, add 1 extra GB or some special features OR lower down package price a little etc? Apparently the answer is yes.

On a different topic, another interesting bashing party going on between broadband providers TIMEs and TM during April's fool day. I would say let the competition begin and monopoly ends. We pay min RM78 per month for a crappy 1Mbps plan that always run on lesser speed that's why.

6 Key Goals to Achieve Financial Freedom by Shane See

Definition of Financial Freedom:
If you look up on the internet, you'll find various definitions on Financial Freedom. Some define Financial Freedom as being debt free and some see Financial Freedom as being able to spend lesser then what they earn. The Wikipedia defines Financial Freedom as the state of having sufficient personal wealth to live indefinitely without having to work actively for basic necessities. I too have my own definition for Financial Freedom which revolves around achieving a X key goals before being able  to declare myself financially free.

Minimizing Car Loan Debts
These are debts that bring no value to your personal wealth or net worth. The most common bad debt everyone would face? Your car loan of course!

While your car value depreciates over the loan period, you're still required to service your loan with the same amount monthly. What's worst is that by the time you finish paying off that 9 year loan, you will still be forking out that same amount (or more) for repairing a 9 year old car that's consistently giving  you problems. The solution? Get a new car and repeat the entire cycle all over again.

Knowing how "comfortable" and "timely" our public transport can be, driving a car has somehow become a necessity for Malaysians. While you might not be able to eliminate this bad debt, you can always minimize it by buying a car that's within your means and taking a shorter loan period to reduce the interest paid to bank..

Zero Installment Debts
This ranges from installments for a new phone, a new laptop, furniture, electrical goods, etc. However you want to look at it, I strongly feel that if you can't afford that item, then don't have it yet. Notice that I highlighted the word yet? That goes to say that if I really want that item, I will eventually own it but only when I have the means to pay everything with cash.

Secondly, most of these items tend to be impulse buys in which we will be still paying the installment long after we lost interest of it. I know I have experienced that before, have you?

Zero Credit Debts
This ranges from accumulating credit card debts to borrowing money from the "Ah Loongs". These are debts that charges sky high interest if you default or late in paying the installment.

Key Goal 2 : Sufficient Insurance Coverage
The biggest problem you will face when you get older is health problems. With the current lifestyle (drinking, smoking) and food intake (laksa, nasi lemak, roti canai, etc) among us Malaysians, the most important goal to achieve is to ensure we have sufficient insurance coverage. When I talk about insurance, I'm looking to ensure that I have sufficient coverage for two types of insurance
1. General Health Insurance + Medical Card
2. Life Insurance

*for ladies, you will have to include additional insurance coverage for diseases affecting woman only

General Health Insurance + Medical Card
Being Financial Free means that you are basically not tied down working for a company. That also means that you will not enjoy the medical benefits and coverage offered by the company. Therefore, ensuring that Item 1 is avaialble is a must for yourself, your wife and your kids too.

Life Insurance
This insurance covers both death and permanent disability. Having a life insurance eases the burden on your family if your life expectancy turns out to be shorter then the average lifespan. It's not an interesting point to write about but we can never rule out the possibility of that happening to you. Having a life insurance will could really turn out to be a blessing in disguise especially once the grieving period is over. Think about it.

Key Goal 3 : Child Education
If you have kids, then the biggest monetary obstacle for any family is education. Once again, we are looking at a worst case scenario where the parents might need to fork out money to pay for their child/ children education. If you're blessed with a brilliant child that could get a scholarship for his or her own education, I am happy for you. However not every kid is blessed with that kind of privilege. As a parent, you should always be prepared to fund your child's education all the way to a degree at least. Therefore key goal 3 highlights the need to establish your child's education fund as early as possible to cater to that monetary obstacle.

Key Goal 4 : Sufficient Income for Living Expenses and Paying Off Good Debts
Living Expenses
Being financially free requires you to have sufficient and consistent passive income to cover your day to day living expenses. Expenses such as food, utility bills, clothing, petrol, etc should be taken into account when planning for your financial freedom. If you're looking at financial freedom in 10 years, then inflation for 10 years must be factored into the equation as well.

Paying Off Good Debts
The most common good debt is a housing loan debt. For me, I consider myself to be financially free even if I am still servicing my housing loan due to the nature of value appreciation for property. As long as my passive income is able to cover the monthly installment, I need not worry much about it.

Key Goal 5 : Availability of Liquid Cash
There's an old Malay "peribahasa" that goes like this; "Sediakan Payung Sebelum Hujan". When the "peribahasa" was taught in school, it really did not mean much to me since there were no worries about money and commitment. As we grow older, it became clear that this phrase was meant to teach us to be prepared for all possibilities in life.

From the aspect of Financial Freedom, this phrase advises us to be prepared with readily available cash in the event of an emergency. The target for Key Goal 5 is to build up a savings equivalent to 6 months worth of your current salary. This cash saving can then be used for unforeseen events such as getting retrenched (losing your job), significant medical expenses, major home or car repairs, etc.

Key Goal 6 : Additional Expenses (Vacations and Enjoying Life) Cash
Being Financially Free is not about having passive income just to live life one day at a time. Being Financially Free is all about having enough money to fulfill Key Goal 4 and having the extra to indulge on things you are passionate about. You might be passionate about travelling, wanting to see the different cultures and sample the different kinds of food all around the world. Well all this can be done once you're financially free with zero worries about being tied down to a job.

Summary:

The 6 Key Goals I mentioned above are the pillars of Financial Freedom. Each pillar must be fundamentally sound in order to enjoy a financially free life. If you're dead serious about wanting to break free from the norms of society, then it's high time you start planning and executing all 6 of the key goals!

Some notes & comments from me
a) where to get passive income? stock investment, rental yield, side biz??

b) how to calculate inflation for next 15 years ? To find out more.

c) child education - if fund by PaMa some people do house loan refinance - get 100k mortgage cash out. Keep some SSPN while still have tax exemption, bank savings? Have other options?

d) Have any retiree got their investment payback? Whats the value vs forecast by insurance?? Gimme a holler ya

e) insurance/health - add: routine workout/jog/running target 3 days a week, join running community/club, eat more balanced food, exercise is part of the formula in my opinion.

f) Liquid cash - if have home loan, do capital repayment. Can withdraw at a fee during emergency and also reduce loan interest. If we serve a 30year home loan with its minimum monthly payment only, we end up paying ~double of the loan amount!

Parenting - Money & You By CAROL YIP

Re-post as constant reminder to myself. Excellent article shared by ck5354

BEING a parent is a challenging job. It's a job that requires lifelong commitment, and you cannot resign from it even if you feel you can't cope. And what's more, parenting requires skills that are not obtainable from school, college or university. Parenting and managing money are the two most important skills that we learn from our parents or adults with whom we grew up, be they our grandparents, nannies or guardians.

As you go through the process of considering how to communicate with your parents and siblings about managing family wealth, you will realise the need to teach your children about money so that you are able to leave your own legacy behind for your children to communicate and manage money harmoniously as a family.

There is really not one proven or standard method of parenting and teaching children about money because of different personalities, behaviours and attitudes. We teach children about money based on how we were taught about money by our own parents or guardians, and from the environment in which we were brought up. Recall your childhood days, and how your parents taught you about money. Were you taught to save your pocket money or to spend it wisely?

Think about the environment you grew up in. Were there times when your parents had money problems and you often heard them argue about it? Or did your parents hide the fact that money was hard to come by in the family? Or were you pampered by your parents with toys, clothes and going out for fun activities and holidays?

Some parents have told me that because of the poverty they experienced during their own childhood, they now try their best to give their children a better life by lavishing them with the material goods and experiences that they themselves never had. By indulging their children, they are not allowing their children to experience financial responsibility.

Different parenting styles

While most parents learn parenting skills from their own parents or by observing others, they will accept some practices and discard others. Effective parenting requires interpersonal skills that can create some emotional demands. Experts in early childhood development say an important dimension of parenting is the style parents adopt when they interact with their children. According to Maccoby and Martin's parenting style typologies, there are four different parenting styles. Depending on the child's character, different parenting styles lead to different results:

1) Authoritarian parenting is a restrictive, punitive style in which parents exhort the child to follow their directions. The authoritative parent places firm limits and controls on the child, and allows little verbal exchange. These parents tend to be very strict and may control the children by limiting their wants and desired wants. In this case, the children may either grow up to rebel' by spending beyond their financial means to fulfil their childhood desires, or they may become very good at managing their money.

2) Nurturing parenting is a style that encourages the child to be independent but still places limits and controls on the child's actions. Extensive verbal give-and-take is allowed, and parents are warm and nurturing towards children. These parents often communicate and teach their children to spend their money wisely by explaining to them the importance of money.

3) Neglectful parenting is a style in which parents are uninvolved in the child's life. Children whose parents are neglectful often develop a sense that other aspects of their parents' lives are more important than they are. Children who grow up in this environment are often deprived of parental love and a sense of belonging in the family. As a result, they may grow up spending lots of money to fulfil their need for love from friends, and from their life partner. Or they may spend money to boost their self-esteem because of the lack of parental love.

4) Indulgent parenting is a style in which parents place few demands or controls on the children. These indulgent parents will let their children do what they want. Children with indulgent parents may often be spoilt by a variety of material things or an impressive lifestyle. The spending behaviour of indulgent parents may condition the children to spend more than they need or more than they can afford when they grow up.

Imagine a situation where the father is indulgent towards a child and provides gifts, toys, fun and pleasure, while the mother, on the other hand, is a disciplinarian with strict rules about gifts, toys, fun and pleasure. Who will the child prefer to be with, and who will the child learn more from? You and your spouse should decide on a best way to handle your children's money expectations. It is important to be consistent and fair to lessen potential family strife.

Communication

According to experts of child psychology, even from a tender age of 2 or 3 years old, a child learns by observation, and from conversations and experiences they have with adults. Hence, effective parenting warrants a tremendous amount of proper learning methods and communication skills. Understandably, today's parents are faced with more issues compared with their parents; the fact that today's younger generation is growing up in an era of media influence, technology advancement and the Internet makes parenting an even more challenging job.

It can be painful for parents to discipline and teach children about saving money, particularly when their children are easily influenced by their friends even as pre-schoolers. This is further compounded by the barrage of advertisements on television and online media that tempts your children with attractive toys, pretty clothes and accessories.

It does not really matter how much money you have or how much joy you derive from showering your children with material things. As parents, you have got to show some restraint and boundary. You don't have to feel guilty about scaling back on spending for your children. Your children may already have more than they need more clothes and shoes than they can wear, toys and games than they have time to play with.

Be mindful that while you are conscious of good money habits for your children, you need to ensure that your children's grandparents, godparents, aunties, uncles, or other adults around them do not indulge them too much with gifts. This may send your children the message that if they cannot get what they want from you, they can get it from them.

Family values

In some situations, a couple may bring different views and values about money and parenting to the marriage. Because of personality, character, family and life experience differences, couples do face conflicting personal and family issues where money is concerned. Therefore, teaching a child about money really begins with teaching your child about the importance and meaning of life values as a family.

Honesty, integrity, teamwork, helpfulness, trust, love, family support, accountability, unity, filial piety, commitment, communication, sharing, spending time with parents and siblings are some of the most important family values that your children ought to know, even if they may be younger than six years old.

Constant messages to your children about how good family values are important in life, and that money cannot buy such values, are more important than parental love expressed in the form of material things for your children.

Teaching them important life values and let them know that money is a means to an end, and not for self-gratification.

Other than sending them to school to gain knowledge and social skills, the money skills that you teach your children from an early age are the most important life education you can provide them with and it actually starts at home. It is as simple as how you and your spouse manage money and communicate about money at home. Your good money skills will rub off on your children.

May this be your new resolutions for teaching your children good money sense!
